A small and growing environmental consulting firm is seeking an Conservation Field Technician to join our team. Impact7G is headquartered in Johnston, IA with multiple offices throughout Iowa and additional staff located throughout the country. The location for this position will be in our North Liberty, IA location. This person will work on a variety of environmental projects which includes field monitoring and investigations, hazardous materials inspections (typically pertaining to lead-based paint & asbestos) and environmental reporting. Applicant should be detail oriented and motivated with the ability to work without supervision upon completion of training. General Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have the knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm to successfully implement day-to-day ecological restoration and management strategies across numerous projects throughout Eastern Iowa. Strong ability to learn from professionals and practitioners in varying fields of ecology. Specific job tasks will include invasive species treatment, brush cutting and piling, flagging, fence line removal, plant identification, herbicide application, prescribed burning, tree planting, cutting and mowing, natural area assessments, native prairie seeding, and wetland enhancement.

Candidates shall carry out the above responsibilities while maintaining a safe and positive environment for coworkers. With each project’s strong attention to detail, focusing on efficiency, innovation, and effective ecological restoration techniques will be met. Depending on experience and ability in the field, additional tasks, including heavy machinery operation, will be included.

This position will be an active contributor to the quality and success of each represented restoration project. The chosen individual must have a can-do attitude, strong work ethic, and garner specialized ecological restoration techniques for future projects.

  • Vegetation management: brush clearing, herbicide application, invasive species removal, rotary mowing, weed whipping, wildland fire, tree tubing, tree planting, tree staking, native prairie planting, fence line removal, flagging, stump grinding, and hand mulching.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, under extreme heat and cold.
  • Heavy machinery operation (e.g., tractors, track loaders, backhoes)
  • Operation and maintenance of small engine equipment (e.g., chainsaws, brush cutters, augers)
  • Time management
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Positive attitude and ability to adapt to changing situations.
  • Open to cross-training.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Possess honesty, integrity, and professionalism.
Desired Experience
  • Associates degree or above desired, but not required.
  • Love for the outdoors and willingness to learn from practitioners and professionals in conservation biology.
  • Team collaboration experience.
  • Highly organized.
  • Independently motivated.
  • Experience with Midwest habitats and ecology.
  • Familiarity with common Midwest native and non-native plant species.
  • Basic knowledge of timber stand improvement techniques.
  • No-till seed drill calibration.
  • Trailer attachment and implement tie-down.
  • Herbicide application; Iowa pesticide applicators license, or willing to obtain.

General Responsibilities

As an Environmental Specialist with Impact7G, you will participate in a wide range of projects which may include: hazardous materials inspections, overseeing environmental remediation projects and completing technical reports for a wide variety of environmental projects. Candidate will work independently on small to medium sized projects and assist senior staff on larger projects. This position entails field sampling, data collection, field equipment operation and other field activities associated with environmental projects as well as data composition into professional reports. You will have the tools, support, direction, guidance and oversight to assist with your professional growth. Applicants will work both in the field and office and should anticipate overnight travel with most travel to occur in Iowa. Nights and weekends will be required on occasion.

 

Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in safety, environmental science, industrial hygiene, or related field
  • 0-5 years’ experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A strong work ethic
  • Perform work individually and in a team environment
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word and Excel
  • A positive attitude and professionalism are required
Preferred, but not required
  • Certifications within the fields of asbestos, lead-based paint and OSHA
  • GIS applications and AutoCAD
  • Previous experience within the construction field
